Is 80% Hard to Achieve?
80% is achievable with proper preparation. The questions are based directly on the CDL manual, and many are straightforward if you've studied the material. The most commonly failed tests are:
- General Knowledge — the largest test with the broadest material
- Air Brakes — technical questions about brake system components
- HAZMAT — requires memorizing placard numbers and hazard classes
What Happens If You Fail?
If you score below 80%, you can retake the test. Each state has its own retake policy:
- Waiting period: Most states require 1 to 7 days between attempts
- Retake fee: Usually $10-$25 per attempt
- Attempt limit: Most states allow unlimited retakes, but some limit to 3 attempts before requiring a longer wait (30-90 days)
Tips to Score Above 80%
- Take practice tests until you consistently score 90%+
- Focus on your weak areas — review missed questions and their explanations
- Read the CDL manual for your state at least once
- Don't rush — you have plenty of time on the real exam
- Answer every question — there's no penalty for guessing
