How Many Questions Are on the CDL Test?
Question counts, time limits, and format for every CDL exam section
The CDL written exam is actually multiple separate tests, not one big exam. The number of questions depends on which tests you need to take based on your CDL class and endorsements.

| General Knowledge | 50 | 60 min | 80% | All CDL classes |

How Many Tests Do You Need?
Class A CDL (minimum)
General Knowledge + Combination Vehicles + Air Brakes = 95 questions
Class B CDL (minimum)
General Knowledge + Air Brakes = 75 questions
Class A + HAZMAT + Tanker
General Knowledge + Combination + Air Brakes + HAZMAT + Tanker = 145 questions
What Format Are the Questions?
All CDL written tests are multiple choice with 3-4 answer options. Questions are drawn from a larger pool, so each test attempt may have slightly different questions. There is no penalty for guessing — always answer every question.
Can You Retake the Test?
Yes. If you fail, most states let you retake the test after a waiting period of 1-7 days. Some states charge a retake fee ($10-$25). There's usually no limit on attempts, but you may need to wait longer after multiple failures.
