How to Get a CDL

Step-by-step guide to earning your Commercial Driver's License in 2026

Getting your CDL involves written tests, a learner's permit, supervised practice, and a skills test. The entire process typically takes 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your state and whether you attend a CDL training school.

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old (21 for interstate driving)
  • Hold a valid regular driver's license
  • Pass a DOT physical examination
  • Provide proof of citizenship or legal residency
  • Pass a background check (required for HAZMAT endorsement)

Step 2: Choose Your CDL Class

Decide which CDL class you need based on the vehicles you plan to drive. Most truck drivers get a Class A CDL for maximum flexibility.

Step 3: Study for the Written Tests

Every CDL applicant must pass the General Knowledge test. Depending on your class and endorsements, you may also need to pass:

Step 4: Get Your CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit)

Pass the written tests at your local DMV to receive your CLP. You must hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test. During this time, you can practice driving with a licensed CDL holder in the passenger seat.

Step 5: Get Training

You have two options:

CDL Training School (Recommended)

3-8 week programs that include classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. Costs $3,000-$7,000 but many employers offer tuition reimbursement.

Self-Study + Practice

Practice with a licensed CDL holder. Lower cost but requires access to a commercial vehicle and a patient mentor.

Step 6: Pass the CDL Skills Test

The skills test has three parts:

  1. Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection — walk around the vehicle and identify components to the examiner
  2. Basic Vehicle Control — straight-line backing, offset backing, parallel parking
  3. Road Test — drive in traffic, make turns, merge onto highways

Step 7: Receive Your CDL

Pass all three parts of the skills test and your state will issue your CDL. You can start driving commercially immediately.
